Time-dependent, four-point density correlation function description of dynamical heterogeneity and decoupling in supercooled liquids

چکیده
Dynamical heterogeneity and the decoupling of diffusion and relaxation in a supercooled liquid is investigated via a time-dependent, four-point density correlation function. We show that the main contribution to the corresponding generalized susceptibility x4(t) in a molecular dynamics simulation of a Lennard-Jones liquid arises from spatial correlations between temporarily localized ~‘‘caged’’! particles. By comparing x4(t) with a generalized susceptibility xM(t) related to a correlation function for the squared particle displacements, we demonstrate a connection between dynamical heterogeneity and the decoupling of relaxation and diffusion. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-9606~00!52402-7#

Spatially heterogeneous dynamics investigated via a time-dependent four-point density correlation function
Relaxation in supercooled liquids above their glass transition and below the onset temperature of ‘‘slow’’ dynamics involves the correlated motion of neighboring particles. This correlated motion results in the appearance of spatially heterogeneous dynamics or ‘‘dynamical heterogeneity.’’ Traditional two-point time-dependent density correlation functions, while providing information about the t...
متن کاملDynamical heterogeneity and nonlinear susceptibility in supercooled liquids with short-range attraction.
Recent work has demonstrated the strong qualitative differences between the dynamics near a glass transition driven by short-ranged repulsion and one governed by short-ranged attraction. Here we study in detail the behavior of nonlinear, higher-order correlation functions that measure the growth of length scales associated with dynamical heterogeneity in both types of systems. We find that this...
متن کاملMultiple length and time scales of dynamic heterogeneities in model glass-forming liquids: a systematic analysis of multi-point and multi-time correlations.
We report an extensive and systematic investigation of the multi-point and multi-time correlation functions to reveal the spatio-temporal structures of dynamic heterogeneities in glass-forming liquids. Molecular dynamics simulations are carried out for the supercooled states of various prototype models of glass-forming liquids such as binary Kob-Andersen, Wahnström, soft-sphere, and network-for...
متن کاملSpatial dimension and the dynamics of supercooled liquids.
Inspired by recent theories that apply ideas from critical phenomena to the glass transition, we have simulated an atomistic model of a supercooled liquid in three and four spatial dimensions. At the appropriate temperatures and density, dynamic density correlation functions in three and four spatial dimensions correspond nearly exactly. Dynamic heterogeneity, quantified through the breakdown o...
متن کاملCoherent neutron scattering and collective dynamics on mesoscale.
By combining, and modestly extending, a variety of theoretical concepts for the dynamics of liquids in the supercooled regime, we formulate a simple analytic model for the temperature and wavevector dependent collective density fluctuation relaxation time that is measurable using coherent dynamic neutron scattering. Comparison with experiments on the ionic glass-forming liquid Ca-K-NO3 in the l...
